There Is No ‘One Size Fits All’ Meaning To Life

Life has no meaning because we are asking the wrong question, the question is not ‘what is the meaning of life?’ The question is ‘what is the meaning of life TO ME?’ Every person on this planet is unique, no matter how much society wants us to conform. There is not a one size fits all approach to any aspect of life, whether that’s clothing, diet or education. So why does everyone always look for a meaning to life that ‘fits’ everyone’s perspective? There is not one meaning to life there are 7 billion different meanings.

The Big Question

Philosophers have studied the question of the meaning  of life for thousands of years, it is the question that is always there in the back of a cultures mind. People have sought the meaning of life through religion, relationships, science and having children. I believe that a very small amount of people ever find their meaning in life and that is why so many people get to the end of their lives look back and think ‘what have I done with my life?’ They never stopped to figure out what their meaning in life was, and if they have tried to figure it out they’ve tried to figure out the one size fits all meaning which just isn’t possible.

What Is The Meaning Of Your Life?

This is a very personal question and the answer to which will be unique to you, it will depend on your environment, upbringing and experiences. I’ve seen a lot of people say that the meaning of life is to be happy, but that is rather vague. Does that mean to be happy all of the time or to have moments of joy? I saw recently Tai Lopez said that you should enjoy what you are doing 80% of the time, you should be happy far more than you are not.

In life there are purely altruistic people, people like Mother Teresa who dedicate their lives to the advancement of others. There are people on the other end of the spectrum who are purely selfish, they live their lives for themselves often at the expense of others. The third type of person has found a balance, they have both selfish and altruistic goals. A purely altruistic person is a very rare thing and the chances of you living your life solely for others is quite unlikely. But becoming selfish is not hard, plenty of people live to earn money and when they get it they spend it all on themselves. If you live your self only for yourself your life will lose meaning and you will end up depressed.

In the end you have to do what makes you happy, if you like to treat yourself then you should. If you are that sort of person you have to treat yourself before you practice altruism or you will lose all motivation to be altruistic. There are plenty of successful people in the world that end up committing suicide, they didn’t choose the right path. Don’t try to follow the suggested path if it doesn’t fulfil you. Some people end up being depressed if they get too much money, it makes them feel guilty to have it whilst others suffer. But some people are the opposite, they will hate to give away their money because they feel they earned it.

You really need to discover what sort of person you are before you act, you don’t want to be the person who gets to the end of their life, looks back and regrets their actions. Know who you are and act accordingly, you will have no regrets.
